I walk and walk and walk
avoid our usual routes
but can't stop my eyes
seeking a familiar shape
the bitter smoke wafting
from that one house
too thick in the air
walk faster, eyes watering
I see a neighbour
recognise the dog first
slow down, look away
to avoid saying out loud
the words they must already know
